This is a vintage Shortrip (Stephenson Mfg. New York) cognac-colored faux leather train/airplane luggage suitcase. This is a carry-on case (likely a vanity case) as it is fitted with an insert featuring a mirror and compartments for beauty sundries. Dating to the late 1940's or early 1950's.
The case measures 13 1/2" by 11" (not including handle) by 6". Faux leather with heavy thread topstitching details, gold tone (brass?) closures and findings, and half-ball metal feet. "Genuine Shortrip Reg US Pat Off" metal disc on the lid. Shortrip also printed in gold metallic on the inside case. Case is lined with moire fabric. Heavyweight clear plastic stitched to one side of the insert panel and the inner bottom of the case. Moire long compartment with elastic shirring on one end of the case.
The insert (which is removeable and held in place with corners at each lower corner and a metal rotating tab at the top) features:
A mirror with faux leather corners to hold it in place.
A snap tab to hold a hairbrush
Five loops below that to hold sundries/bottles.
Single owner (this case held my doll's clothes). Condition: Good vintage used condition, coming from a smoke-free, pet-free environment. NO KEY INCLUDED.
Closure mechanisms work well. Ageing and wear to all metal findings. General surface wear to the faux leather surfaces -- with some scuffing, marks, scratches, darkening, and small places of leather loss. Light circular impression on the outer lid side of the case. Reddish stain on the inside lid (moire). Edgewear to the silverizing of the mirror. Elasticizing of the moire compartment has relaxed over time and is not very tight. Ink (?) stains to the inside of the elasticized compartment and the wall behind it. Surface scratches on the plastic protective liners. Also please review all of the photos for condition issues.
